A crew that made headlines in 2015 and has continued to only gain momentum ever since is one that needs no introduction. Before winning the World of Dance Championship in which India was represented for the first time, Desi Hoppers were seen playing an integral part of the Channel V Show ‘Dil Dosti Dance’.
The crew is now back in action, visiting Delhi to host their SteetMation Workshop, and we for one, can’t wait. If you are, by any chance still living in a bubble and don’t know enough about Desi Hoppers, here are 6 things that you must!
The Birth of Desi Hoppers
Desi Hoppers was founded by Palki Malhotra along with Shantanu Maheshwari, Macedon D’Mello and Nimit Kotian, in 2015 through India-wide auditions, for the finite dance series Bindaas Naach. The show aimed to showcase the journey and struggles of forming a dance crew and performing at an international level. The show had appearances by the likes of Jaja Vankova of So You Think You Can Dance, along with Indian choreographer and dance guru Terence Lewis. In an interview, Palki Malhotra revealed that the idea for the crew evolved during the days of Channel V’s fiction dance show Dil Dosti Dance, where the four founding members had worked together. She added that their shared vision led to her helping them in translating the crew into reality.
After their victory at World of Dance 2015, Desi Hoppers was invited to give a special performance on America’s Got Talent Season 11 and received praise from judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum and Nick Cannon. They further gave a special performance on the hit Chinese show Day Day Up on Hunan Television and in 2016, they were featured in special promotional videos by NBC for World of Dance.
Friends, Not Just Colleagues
The one thing that makes Desi Hoppers stand out instantly is their special bond of friendship. Each of the members understand each other and help each other, not just in their professional capacities but as friends. While they do joke around saying that they click pictures only when they are forced, one can peep into their stoic voices and fathom the admiration they have for each other.
Right from Mohit washing his hair only once a week to Macedon’s hot pants, Nimit’s self proclamation of being a fitness freak while eating Ragda Patices sponsored by Macedon to Shantanu powdering his feet, everything about Desi Hoppers is quirky.. And fun! They know how to pull each other’s legs and will make sure you learn it while at the workshop, too!
Dreams for Dance
Dance to Desi Hoppers, is not just their profession and passion but the biggest source of their happiness. The crew is inspired most to spread their love for dance, it’s culture and educate people around the world about the importance of dance. After putting India on the International Dance Map, the StreetMation workshop (being held around the country) is their first step of taking their dance journey forward and to every dancer.
‘Originality’ is a Necessity
Desi Hoppers say that ‘Originality is what drives their creative abilities’ and that is probably the one thing we can constantly expect from this dance crew. They work extremely hard to bring more value and original touches to their sequences and emphasize on its importance because they believe originality is important to bring out the style quotient in you.
Needless to say, the dance workshop gracing Delhi from the 28th – 30th of April is going to a fun-filled, dance-packed and an ‘originally’ out of the box one. If you want to learn or even fangirl over Desi Hoppers, register right away!
