The Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) is an engineering institute located in Chromepet, Chennai (Madras), India. It was established in 1949 by C. Rajam as the first self-financing engineering institute in the country. The institute was at that time an experiment in technical education, because it introduced India to new areas of specializations i.e. aeronautical engineering, automobile engineering, electronics engineering and instrumentation technology. Former president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is an alumnus and he belongs to the 3rd batch of this premier institute.
Mitafest is the inter-college cultural festival of this renowned institution and is believed to be the oldest college cultural festival in Southern India. It is awaited every year, drawing 15,000-20,000 students from all over the nation.
