By now, BITS Goa’s sports festival, Spree, needs no introduction. With massive participation from Indian colleges, state-of-the art sports facilities, performances by some of India’s biggest stars, it has cemented its name in the top sports festivals of India, and Spree 2017 was no different.
The action kicked off on Day 0 itself, with some of the favorites easily winning their matches early on. BITS FC, Chowgule, Jamia Milia all breezed through their group games of football, with much fanfare from the crowds watching. Meanwhile, the home team in men’s basketball faced a bitter loss at the hands of SRGI, Jabalpur, and having led for majority of the game, the home team didn’t have the killer instinct to go on to win the game. Other teams in men’s Basketball had routine victories in their pool stages.
After an action-packed first day at the grounds, they had an inspiring conversation with the world cup winning captain Kapil Dev. He certainly had some nice words of encouragement for all the athletes taking part in the tournament, and also parted with some wise words of wisdom on facing adversity and facing your challenges head on.
Day 2 continued the excitement – rightfully dubbed as “Semi-final Saturday”, it witnessed matches such as FLAME vs BITS in the first of the matches in Women’s Basketball. For all the fight shown by the home team girls, the game was always going to end in a nail biter, and the home team lost the game by a single point. The men’s home team entertained the crowd in their second group stage winning by a comfortable margin.
BITS FC, won their quarterfinal game against KJ Somaiya College of Engineering by a margin of 2-0. Apart from this, informals events like the Hogathon & Mock IPL auctions kept people entertained throughout the day, while the night was truly owned by two of the most popular names in the Indian comic scene. Abhis Matthew and Sahil Shah had the entire crowd rolling in laughter, and it was a nice way to end a super competitive day.
Day 3 saw the deciding matches of most events and the thrill and excitement could be sensed among the crowd, especially for the events where the home teams had secured their places in the finals. Much to the chagrin of the home crowd, BITS FC lost their semi-final football match on penalties, again, after 2-2 draw at end of normal play. Jamia Milia, the very team which beat BITS FC, went on to win the whole tournament, again on penalties in the finals. The BITS Girls Basketball team went on to secure the second place in a threeway finals, beating MIT, Manipal by a comfortable margin after a brilliant all round performance from the team. The finalist teams for squash were NDA and Manipal. NDA defeated Manipal comfortably by a margin of 2-0. While the single’s finals were held in the evening, Mayank from NDA defeated Vartik Shah from GDCH.
Day 3 ended on a high note with the power packed performance by The Local Train. The band has performed in multiple high profile stages, and what made it more exciting was the fact that the concert was a free-for-all concert. The band had the entire crowd in a trance, grooving to the tunes of Aaoge tum Kabhi, Choo Le, Yeh Zindagi Hai among many of it’s popular songs.
All in all, Spree 2017 was indeed a sporting carnival. The fest saw some high-intensity games, good sportsmanship, and stunning performances by The Local Train and the other entertainers truly wrapped up a wonderful 3 days.
