At Zee Educare 2019, Tanvi Makkar met Neha Sharma (or Neha Doodles) and had a conversation with her about her journey, her favourite comic artists, and her dog Minty.
Neha Sharma never had a Plan B, neither does she have a formal education in the field of art. She considered doodling as a career when a local newspaper published her work and she contacted them to mention the credits. Soon after that, a brand approached her, one thing lead to another, and now she runs an empire on her Instagram by the handle @NehaDoodles. Even though she never considered herself to be good at art, she did not compromise with hard work and her consistent efforts paved way for a journey to fame. Ambedkar University student Tanvi Makkar bumped into the artist at Zee Educare 2019, and spoke to her about her incredible journey. Here are excerpts from their conversation.
Do you think you would have ever discovered your talent, if it was not for Instagram?
Not really. I owe all my success to the Internet – to Instagram and Facebook, in general. I would have never approached brands and pursued doodling offline.
Did your friends or family ever push you towards doodling?
No. Doodling has never been a mainstream form of art in their eyes. I built my confidence through validation from strangers on the internet, before brands started approaching me. And even now, my family only supports me because of all the success I got.
Who are your favorite Instagram doodle artists, apart from yourself?
Firstly, I am not my favorite. And if I have to name the ones that I like, it would be (without any order of preference) – 1) @shencomix; 2) @adamtots; and 3) @goodbadcomics
How did your pet dog, ‘Minty’ contribute to your journey?

All of us know Minty as the Sass Queen, so she plays a very important role. I’ve always had dogs around throughout my life and we consider them as a member of our family. My mother and I always would have conversations about what the dog is possibly thinking, and following up to this I made it a crucial part of my comics as well.
Did you ever have days when you felt like quitting and going back to being a Chartered Account?
I found the work boring from the very beginning when I started working as a trainee. So, even if doodling did not work out for me, I would have never considered going back to my job as a CA. I am hiring people to handle my taxes, which goes on to say that I was never interested in this field!
What is the one message that you would like to give to your fans or the people who want to pursue doodling as a career?
I think that people these days are lacking patience. It took me about three and a half years to get constant work. So, it’s important to really believe in your work and remain consistent to stay motivated and excel. ‘Patience’ is the key.
