JanFest: An Ode to a Legend, & a Line-up of Maestros
St. Xavier’s, Mumbai’s Indian Music Group pays an ode to Gaanasaraswati Smt. Kishori Amonkar, and reveals a line-up of the country’s finest for their JanFest, on their 45th anniversary.
Every January at the Indian Music Group is a special one, for it is this month that bears witness to two of its most prestigious concerts – the flagship ‘Janfest’, which takes place on the 25th and 26th of the month, and its precursor, ‘Birthday Concert’, which traditionally is held in the first or second week of January. With the IMG turning forty-five this year, the listeners were ensured that they were in for an aural treat.
Indian Classical Music lost one of its greatest gems on the 3rd of April, 2017, when Gaanasaraswati Smt. Kishori Amonkar breathed her last. It was befitting on part of the IMG to hold a concert in memory of Kishoritai, who not only rendered audience speechless with her soulful voice, but also graced the IMG stage several times over the past years, the last one being in 2009. This tribute was conducted by Vidushi Smt. Padma Talwalkar, one of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana’s stalwarts, whose vocals filled the St. Xavier’s College Hall with the reminiscence of her greatest inspiration. Accompanied by Shri Utpal Datta on the Tabla and Smt. Seema Shirodkar on the Harmonium, the First Session of Birthday Concert 2018 is one to remember for years to come.
The Second Session featured Ustad Sabir Khan on the Sarangi, and his nephew Salman Khan on the Sitar. Two of the foremost exponents of the Sikar Gharana, their performance, a perfect melange of the traditional style their ancestors propounded, and the nouveau techniques perfected by uncle and nephew. Needless to say, the listeners were all praise for this jugalbandi.
The Birthday Concert holds a special place in the heart of every classical music auteur, not only for the quality of performances one gets to witness, but also for being the day when the line-up for Janfest is announced. Through a wonderful video that chronicled the history of the previous Janfests, the line-up for Janfest 2018 was revealed:
