‘The War’ A Brilliant Original

Music often means different things to different people. Some think of it as an escape from reality, while some think that it brings them closer to reality. For our next Boombox talent, Nyla Saldanha, a second year BMM student from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, it is a way of expressing herself.

Nyla has been singing for as long as she can remember.

I grew up in the town of Kolar Gold Fields and was exposed to a lot of Boney M, ABBA and Country Music that I loved singing along to. Plus, I was that kid that was asked to sing at the family party and honestly, I loved the attention and performing.

She has performed at several college festivals, including, Kscope 2016 & 2017, Quintessence 2016 at TISS, Polaris 2016 and Malhar at Carters 2017. Recently, she released an original song of hers called ‘This War’, which she had written almost a year ago.

It’s a song that’s open to interpretation but to me it’s about relationships and accepting the harsh reality that there isn’t anything left to salvage from something that was once beautiful. It made me feel really vulnerable that I put all these emotions up on the internet, but the response I’m getting makes it worth it. I’m just glad people are feeling things.

The cover art for ‘This War’, which Nyla calls a ‘masterpiece’ was drawn by Priyanka Paul, one of Nyla’s best friends. She considers herself to be lucky in having a great support system in her friends.

So, what inspires this talented singer?

Lots of things honestly, sometimes it’s a weird dream I’ve had, a quote from a movie or a show that I’m watching, or the weather, or a random thought that I’ve had or something someone said to me, or a song I’ve been listening to on repeat. Anything and anyone that I can feel the emotion behind inspires me.

Nyla hopes to see herself doing something that involves music, travelling, writing and interacting with people from different backgrounds and cultures in the long run.

As of now, she plans on recording some more of her songs and we’re already eager to hear what she’s got in store for us.
