It is not easy to lose a loved one, and living with their memory can often get increasingly difficult with the passage of time. 19 year-old Vernon Aaron D’Souza, however, believed that one way to immortalize his best friend, Duke, was to dedicate a song to him.
Watch his heartfelt goodbye to Duke here:
Vernon is a second year student at Wilson College, and started singing at the tender age of 3. Without any formal training, he would perform at school events. His first ever performance was in his hometown, Asansol, West Bengal, at a singing competition. Due to a barrage of surgeries, he could not perform at many college festivals apart from one hosted by his own college. Vernon, however, did not let this affect his talent and conviction. His hard work got him a chance to sing on the esteemed 94.3 Radio One, hosted by Hrishikesh Kanan.
When asked about his cover of Jealous by Labrinth, this is what he had to say:
“I covered Jealous after Duke, my two year old Labrador, passed away. It aptly describes how I felt after losing him, and I know a lot of people would relate to the feeling if they’ve lost someone dear to them.”
An aspiring chart-topping singer-songwriter, Vernon adds that his biggest inspirations are Freddy Mercury, Ed Sheeran, and Zayn Malik. What also inspires him to perform is the emotion he brings out in his audience.
Talking about projects he looks forward to in the near future, he tells us excitedly about his upcoming performance at KCA Hall and Hostel, Bandra, for their Christmas Programme on the 10th of December.
